In the US, the Pedestrian Safety Institute has declared July National Roadside Traffic Safety Awareness Month, emphasizing the importance of pedestrian/emergency visibility. If you are seen well, you can avoid being part of the traffic accident statistics. Carrying a flashlight, wearing reflective clothing and being more visible can significantly reduce the risk of accidents.
